Peter Burrough: A Research Appreciation
نویسنده
چکیده
With the death of Peter Alan Burrough in Leiden on 9 January 2009 the field of geographic information science (GIScience) lost one of its founding fathers, a scholar whose contribution was prolific, rigorous, original, and always ground-breaking. His career was marked by numerous firsts, including the first widely read textbook on geographic information systems (Burrough, 1986). He directed over 40 completed PhD theses, many from students who later became GIScience leaders in their own right. He directed many large projects and centers, and was instrumental in the founding of two major European organizations: EUROGI (the European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information) and AGILE (the Association of Geographic Information Laboratories Europe). He was honored in 2007 by a special issue of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science containing seven papers written by colleagues (van der Perk, de Jong, and McDonnell, 2007)

Propagation of errors in spatial modelling with GIS
One of the most powerful capabilities of GIS, particularly for the earth and environmental sciences, is that it permits the derivation of new attributes from attributes already held in the GIS database. For example, elevation data in the form of a digital elevation model (DEM) can be used to derive maps of gradient and aspect (Hutchinson and Gallant, Chapter 9); or digital maps of soil type and...
متن کامل20 Years of AGILE
Preceded by a ‘personal word’ from the authors, the focus of this paper is on a number of facts and activities that together describe how AGILE developed from an idea in the garden of the late Peter Burrough in Wageningen in July 1997 to a mature and well known organization nowadays. After a short description of those very first years where the reason for existence was discussed that resulted i...
متن کاملDynamic GIS
Most GIS are an epitome of static, which is why to many people the word ‘dynamic GIS’ is an oxymoron. GIS usually is about data and to a much lesser degree about what can be done with the data. As such, GIS can be compared to early 20 century geography – an Aristotelian description of ‘where is what’ and ‘what is where’ (Barnes 1984). Process, and the notion of change, are acknowledged on the s...
